Dr. Richardson's research program has focused on cultural practices that impact cool- and warm-season turfgrass production in the transition zone. In addition, he has been actively involved with research to screen and develop new turfgrass for a wide range of turfgrass environments. As a result of those efforts, Dr. Richardson has been an inventor or co-inventor on 15turfgrass cultivars approved through Plant Patent, Plant Variety Protection, or the National Grass Variety Review Board. In collaboration with Dr. Doug Karcher, Dr. Richardson has been actively involved with research at the University of Arkansas to develop methodology using digital image analysis to quantitatively measure turfgrass performance parameters that have historically been measured using subjective analysis.
Dr. Richardson has also had a productive, applied research program that focuses on genetic and cultural factors associated with turfgrass management in Arkansas and throughout the transition zone. The major areas of research include the integration of improved seeded warm-season grasses into diverse turf environments, drought tolerance screening of turfgrasses, foliar fertilization of putting green turf and shade tolerance of sports turf grasses. Dr. Richardson's research program has been fully integrated to include work with visiting scholars, post-doctoral students, PhD students, MS students, and undergraduates.
Dr. Richardson has received numerous awards for his research, including being named a Fellow in the American Society of Agronomy and the Crop Science Society of America. Dr. Richardson has served as the Editor of Applied Turfgrass Science, a peer-reviewed journal in the Plant Management Network and an Associate Editor of Crop Science.
